Information that will change our lives!

Where in the world are you?
I’m Brendan and from Spokane, WA
What stage of your career are you at?
Pretty new to UX. I come from a business process improvement, training, and technology background. I now run the user centric design group at a manufacturing company. My job is to create vision on how we can integrate technology into the machines, and ensure each machine and software tool we build is user friendly.
What are you current challenges?
Combining user centric design, which typically has focused on software, into mechanical design.
What aspect/s of UX are passionate about?
Eliminating the learning curve of our machines so any new user will feel comfortable and confident in using our machines.
Cats or dogs?
Not even a competition…dogs for sure.

Howdy! I was just in your time zone. :sunglasses:

Sydney, Australia
Mid-Senior: I’ve been a digital designer 4+ years > UI/Interaction Designer 3+ > now UX/UI designer 1+ years
I find it hard to know what and how to test/validate ideas while convincing team it is the best route to take
I love the objectivity and data driven designs aspect of UX that goes hand in hand with the subjective, creative aspects of UI and Visual deisgn. it completes the design field into being something holistic and true.
Used to love cats until wife showed me poodle pup pics. now love dogs but own neither :frowning:

Ha. Love it.

Welcome @arash_rahmati. Tell me, how did you find us and what has the experience been like so far?

I’m a senior UX working on contract at .GOV in the UK

I like cats.

YAY! We can always use more cat lovers!

I have been an on and off lurker. Looking for a community of UXers that share information and advice. Didn’t like the Stack Exchange UX forum, this one is much more of a community, liking it so far  @HAWK

  • Where in the world are you?
    I am from Melbourne, Australia
  • What stage of your career are you at?
Currently working as a Front-End developer contemplating a change to a design career, more specifically UX design.
  • What are you current challenges?
The biggest challenge for me is that I have no design background at all and I need to learn the basics well first.
  • What aspect/s of UX are passionate about?
Coming from a technical background I enjoy the problem solving part of UX. However its a different kind of problems that engineers have to solve(which tend to be more machine problems.) UX solves human problems
  • Cats or dogs?
    Dogs all day

Hi everyone!

Where in the world are you?
Irvine, CA

*** What stage of your career are you at?**

I am currently an Ecommerce Specialist - Managing two online branded Ecommerce websites for a company.
We’re looking at redesigning both websites, but starting with one. Looking at what it’s going to involve has really peaked my interest in the whole UX design process. It’s actually got me thinking of moving my career towards UX Design.

I have a wide variety of experience from my background that I’m thinking will certainly help:

AA in Photography
5+ Years Technical Support for Hardware and Software on both PC and Mac
3+ Years Digital Marketing from Amazon, Wayfair, Ebay, Direct Branded Websites, Social Media Campaigns, PPC, Google Analytics, Email Design and Campaigns, Product Information Management Systems (setup and maintenance and support), Redesigning the visuals for the company kitchen, etc.

Overall, I have always loved creative design and art so this comes fairly naturally to me. (Painting, Digital Drawings, Murals, Mixed Media, etc.) I love a blend though of both skills between logic and creative and UX seems like a perfect combination.

*** What are you current challenges?**

The redesign of this company website has me shaking in my boots a bit. I want it to go well and I have great ideas, but I don’t know who all would be involved in the project or how to get started. I’m hoping connecting with a community of other designers will help put some structure to what a career in UX design is like, what’s needed and how I can build on my existing skills.

*** What aspect/s of UX are passionate about?**

I LOVE great design. I love designing online websites/projects that are really visually appealing and easy to navigate. I used to play a ton with html and javascript growing up to customize my own online blog/website (before the word “blog” was a thing or Myspace/Facebook came along". I still play with coding when it comes to our company websites or email design. There’s a lot of missing gaps though in my knowledge about coding and the world of UX Design. It seems so interesting and I’m feeling really excited about where this path might take me!

*** Cats or dogs?**

Oh cats definitely. Don’t get my wrong, I think dogs are great, but I’ve never had one myself and always grew up around cats. I have a little calico named Umbra who is super snuggly and responds to the words, “snuggle time” whenever it’s time for bed. She has her “blankey” that she likes to lay on next to me and gets upset if I get up in the middle of the night for any reason. lol She is slightly spoiled. :stuck_out_tongue:

Welcome @jasonpompon and @crystal_j_parker – so glad you’re both here.

I’m curious about this. Do you mean 3 years working, or is ‘work experience’ a different thing.

And welcome

Thanks! Yeah, 3 years working, I phrased it weirdly  I work as a ui/ux designer at a publishing house.

Fantastic! You’ll be well utilized around this place.

Ah yes. This is an interesting one. What is the current state of play?

Actually, the whole company is mostly aware of the importance of bringing value to the user because it’s is a natively digital direct to consumer fashion brand and, this kind of business uses to look more to the user when compared to others. But there is one very important thing I have to work to change in the company’s culture that is to think of the Engineering (where is all the POs, agiles, UXDs and devs) just as the executioner of the business departments ideas, you know? Like, we have to have this button on the home screen, please do it. No! What’s the problem you are trying to solve? We’ll think about it and come out with the better solution we can.
So, I was in charge of creating the UX Design Framework for the company and run it. The good part is, most of the people are very open to changes and they’ve already seen the value we can generate.
My other challenge is to advocate for the user when talking with business departments in a decision like "Let’s have a registration form with only 3 fields because it’s easier and we’ll have a better conversion. No, it’s important to have 6 fields because we want to activate the user this or that way with promotion material, you know? A user vs. business-centric company kind of discussion. I think that it’s where I am now.

Hi all! Since I am new here, can someone teach me how to message a user personally, I can’t seem to notice anything that will lead me to a direct message?

Hi @danaguer - Welcome to the community! It’s good to have you. :grinning:

To send a direct message to someone, click on their name to go to their profile. In the upper right corner of their profile page, you should see a “Message” button. I hope that helps.

Can we be best friends?

Of course we can :grinning:
If you want to talk, count on me.
