Hello, really enjoying some of the content here in the UXMastery community so thought I’d post my own story
How did you get started? A mixture of a background in Social Psychology and an interest in tech. On leaving University I struggled to find any role in the Psychology area so fell back on my experience in Audio/Visual technology (I’d been working in theatre since I was 14). While working as an A/V Technician there arose a requirement for an intranet to share ideas and work which I took on which led to my interest in web design.
Over the years i was able to thread my Sociology/Psychology experience back into my web design work leading to me being able to work full time in UX :).
Are you interested in a particular area?
Particular interest areas for myself are around eCommerce and retail UX (the reason I moved into my current role), collaborative tools and processes, linked data and the growth of the Internet of Things.
Do you work in UX?
Yep worked for a large consultancy for a few years which was great in regards to experience, worked on multilingual sites, video-on-demand services (where my A/V experience came in useful), led off-shore teams (great for learning about collaboration and cultural working differences). Problem I found in a consultancy setting was the layer of separation between the work i was doing for the clients and the requirements of the company. Due to this I looked at what areas I was both really interested in and would offer the opportunity to innovate and moved into retail/eCommerce directly for a company.
