Dark patterns and persuasive design

I’ve been passionate about persuasive design for a while now, and I was sorry to have missed UX Australia, where Ben Tollady (@tollady ) of Thirst studios did a talk called Under the influence: Exploring dark patterns & the power of persuasive design.

Does anyone know of any related articles or resources on the subject?

Ah, dang it, I really enjoyed perusing @tollady’s http://darkpatterns.org/! I would have loved to have heard his talk. Last I checked the list of sites listed as having dark patterns was a bit out of date, but the site itself was a tremendous resource to underhanded tactics used by the darksiders.

I enjoyed the site too! It was a really good quick introduction and visualisation of the different methods. Theirs has been the main one I’ve looked at, although I think Smashing Magazine has had 1 or 2 articles on the topic too. Sorry I don’t have anything on hand though!

Just found this: http://www.fastcodesign.com/3060553/why-dark-patterns-wont-go-away

Hey folks! I found a bunch of great articles as part of the research for our talk. I’ll dig some out and post them here when I have a little more time.

In the meantime, you can check out the talk slides here, which include a few references to further reading on the last slide: http://www.slideshare.net/tollady/under-the-influence-dark-patterns-the-power-of-persuasive-design

Feel free to hit me up with any further questions. I’m by no means an expert on Dark Patterns, but I’m certainly interested in them, along with Persuasive design, behaviour change and design responsibility and ethics.

Hawk - With a bit of luck we might be bringing the talk to UX New Zealand!

I’m not responsible for Dark Patterns! That’s a chap called Harry Brignull. We used it a lot in putting our talk together though. Great resource!

I heard that! Fingers crossed. Have you been over the ditch before?

Yes! I spent a month there in 1999. Would be good to visit again!

Did you check the Persuasive Patterns on http://UI-Patterns.com/patterns ?

@tollady And it’s confirmed! Awesome. Looking forward to your talk, and picking your brains over a beer.

Here are a few links, but even these say the same concept with the same frame of reference.

Hello guys,

I just arrived on this forum and I’m discovering great articles thanks to you. I am trying to right my final thesis (Master Marketing Digital Business) about persuasive design, behaviour changes and design responsibility/ethics. I’m looking for some references, books, literature reviews, serious studies, or just simple advices to treat this subject. I am still looking for a specific problematic for now the subject is quite broad, so I am open to any suggestions

(Btw I’m french so please forgive me if I make english mistakes)

In advance I’d like to say a big thank you for your help

ProPublica had a good look at how TurboTax implements a lot of dark patterns to trick people into paying to file their taxes in the US.

On their website

And a thread on twitter

Sorry for my late answer !! Not really i’m more looking for research paper that talks about those dark patterns in the digital attention crisis than actual exemples (but it is still interessant to have a look on those examples)
